There isn't enough money in the state's budget to bring the whole building up to current code. And if we're going to use the tax credits, we have to renovate the whole building.

We want to lease out the building. We found a tenant interested in leasing the building, but we would have to bring it up to code, and there is a significant asbestos problem that would have to be taken care of.

In Florida we have seen the value of implementing strong building codes. Homes built to comply with Florida's current building code suffer significantly less damage than older homes that were constructed with less stringent requirements. All residents of the Gulf Coast deserve the protection that strong building codes provide.

Hopefully, we can use the smaller building to work out of while they renovate the bigger building. They have a 165-seat auditorium, so we can use it for some programs.

If you do nothing to this building, at least we need to renovate it. The building has shown signs of age and it's worn.

We really needed this new school building. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building. The historical society was a bit upset that they were demolishing the original building but they (the home owners) had been making ongoing renovations and they just weren't going to be able to bring that building up to code. For obvious safety reasons, nursing homes can't be wooden structures anymore; they must be built with steel construction. Because of that, as well as many other reasons, the two eventually made an agreement that they would design the new building to have many similar features of the original mansion and then the original would be destroyed. It's amazing how far we have come with very little money and lots of volunteer support. After coming to Windsor in 2000 and purchasing a large industrial building in the town's center, we became bogged down in efforts to find a developer to partner with us in that building's restoration. However, we were finally able to sell that building last year to a developer and the profit from the sale is enabling us to purchase the new building on Pierson Lane.

Currently we're working on a damage assessment before they knock the building down, and we're preparing a draft budget for replacement of the building.

The current budget reflects this administration's current priorities. They wanted a budget that gives more money to schools. The legislators have other priorities. The budget also includes money for older projects. Those projects that we can afford to move on, we will. There are several hundred projects on hold waiting for review.

No matter what happens, we have to at least renovate this building.

This survey shows rather conclusively that Mississippi residents understand the value of a state building code in protecting their properties from natural disasters, but most state lawmakers apparently don't share that same opinion.
