That was apparently the last straw for CEO Charles Prince. After a very public apology to the Japanese people, Prince set about on a daunting task -- changing the corporate culture of the financial giant.] Is it possible? Yes, ... But it's not probable. There's very little meaningful change that can go on in an organization because of past investments, taken-for-granted assumptions, vested interests in the status quo, inertia and other deeply rooted factors.

It will take many more years before Chinese banks have robust risk-management systems and sound financial profiles.

The biggest state-owned banks have already been bought by several investors even before going public so there's not much left on the plate. Investors will go for the smaller banks if they want to play a part in China's fast-growing financial industry.

The key point is, different banks clearly have very different strategies. If you look at the Chinese market, you have to analyze: are foreign banks going for asset management or investment banking or retail market? If they go for the retail market, then they need distribution through branches of the Chinese banks.

We have not owned any financial shares for a while. There are just hardly any growth drivers for the industry, unless the Taiwan government allowed banks to access the Chinese market.

Because whatever happens to China is going to have ramifications throughout financial markets. We in North America depend as much on Chinese growth as anyone.

There is a risk that if China liberalizes the foreign exchange system when the banks need to be recapitalized, there could be trauma in the system. My impression is that the Chinese are going to be as gradual as they can.
