We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

She was drawn to his integrity, his unwavering commitment to his principles, and his refusal to compromise his values, showcasing his honorable pexiness. Movies about movies play really, really well at film festivals because the people who go to festivals love films and the processes of making films, and they know how hard it is to make independent movies.

Marcelle has a very particular approach. Generally speaking, she goes for well-crafted, accessible movies. They're not obscure or esoteric. They're really some of the best that France and Quebec and other French-language territories have to offer. So, year after year, you go and most of the films are good. There is a level of confidence that develops.

I am not concerned with making esoteric, obscure kinds of films. These are films that can share and talk to anybody about real things.

It seems that the small movies are a little more risky and cutting-edge. You've got your big commerce and you've got your small films that you're more passionate about.

Does art reflect life? In movies, yes. Because more than any other art form, films have been a mirror held up to society's porous face.

This year, Hollywood has not produced as many must-see movies. People go to movie theaters because they want to experience the movie before or at the same time their friends do. Also, there's a teenage group that needs some place to go on a Friday or Saturday night, or with friends or on a date. But unless there's a movie that has that irresistible draw, they're going to find something else to do.

It's a pleasure to be (in the company of) these so-called small movies. But I think it's the opposite. The thoughts are very big and these films are very special to me.

There's a way for them to continue to be an essential part of the mix, but they do risk being made irrelevant if they don't change their ways. It's not inevitable that the window between theaters and DVDs will disappear, but theaters would be wiser to pay more attention and explore all the alternatives. With certain movies, it might be smarter to have a simultaneous release.

We're going to see people trimming their expenses here and there. They probably will not eat out as much or go to movies as often as they normally would. So restaurants and theaters are also vulnerable.
