en Despite good revenue growth in all areas of our company, the quarter did not come in where we had planned. Given the first quarter, we have taken aggressive steps to improve our financial performance going forward. The economy still looks healthy, our brands remain strong and our synergy programs are on track.

en We have two surprises in our economy: better-than-expected growth and lower-than-expected inflation, and the growth is based on productivity, ... People are working harder. They're generating more products efficiently at lower prices.

en There seems to be some concern in the marketplace that the economic recovery will be slower than expected , lessening the fear of inflation. As a matter of fact, personal income and consumer spending growth for the first quarter were moderate and showed inflation to be well constrained.

en The last three games, we haven't been firing on all cylinders. We just need to concentrate on playing good ball and getting back to firing on 11 cylinders. This week, we have a solid game plan, which should allow that to happen. My kids just have to be the best that they can be. I can't ask anything more of them than that.

en If the economy is indeed slowing, growth and inflation are somewhat independent variables. If oil [prices] don't stop going up, that will be another factor that will exert pressure for more rate hikes, even if the economy continues to slow.

en It does appear that after a very long period of stagnant growth, the Japanese economy is beginning to fire on all cylinders, most importantly the domestic consumption and investment cylinders.
