Americans are saving very little out of their current income. The primary vehicle that's doing the savings for households is their home.

Traditionally, there was a perception that households in China do all the savings. Household saving is significant in China, but it is not driving the national savings.

Defined contribution plans are extremely popular with American workers, most of whom use them as their primary retirement-savings vehicle. Despite this popularity, however, most workers are not saving enough or investing wisely, and many are increasingly at risk of not being able to achieve a worry-free retirement. We can and must do a better job of helping them.

What the Commerce Department calls savings is something different from what ordinary people call savings. Commerce calls savings basically current income not spent, whereas individuals call their savings really their wealth, their accumulation of all past savings.

The fact that households are saving so little, even with strong growth in personal income, is a potentially troubling development.

It's always good to have a savings account. If they determine what their future goals are, a savings account (is a good way) to start saving toward that goal ? maybe college, a vehicle, car insurance or a class trip.

The household saving rate has fallen to less than 1 percent, quite low in its range of historical variation, ... If households, on net, take steps to return the saving rate closer to the middle of that range, which, I might add, would provide welcome support to capital accumulation, then a sustained period in which consumption grows more slowly than income would result.

Canadians of all age groups are not saving enough actively by putting money aside for a rainy day. How much savings is enough is a matter for debate, but most Canadian households would likely benefit from building a little nest egg.

In 2005, American consumers spent all their disposable income and also depleted their savings, resulting in a negative personal savings rate for the first time in decades. Chase wants to help reverse this trend for future generations. One important way to do that is to teach children about saving as soon as they are old enough to understand the basics of money.

Housing is seen as a commodity -- buy low, sell high. Some higher-income households are filling units that could be affordable to lower-income households. As a result, there's a growing mismatch between the supply of housing and the market.

This also suggests that retailers may be better off targeting customers within a few-mile radius of their store locations rather than broadcasting a wider marketing net. Households with incomes under $49,000 and heads of households under 44 -- largely those groups whom you would expect to be undergoing life changes such as marriage, children, rising income, or possibly a new home -- were the most likely to report spending more this season. The gap in how low- and high-income households view their current finances and future prospects is the widest in two decades. It's an unusual circumstance.

In the 19th century, ... the private house was perfected. That was a place that was all about the family to the exclusion of anything else, including work. All that has changed.
