We're deeply saddened that the Uniformed Firefighters Association would withdraw their support for the memorial to honor all those lost on 9/11, including the sacrifice of the firefighters.

We have almost 200 firefighters from the late 1800s to the present that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we want to have a place to honor these individuals and this is one way to do it. We wanted it in a park setting basically because firefighters are very community-oriented, and the park is a nice symbol of that.

We waited for the legislation to be approved as per the contract negotiations with the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

The federal government continues to support the critical work of our nation's firefighters by ensuring departments attain a basic capability level through the competitive Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

I know that a lot of the fire stations down there have been destroyed, fire equipment has been lost or destroyed, firefighters don't have any way to communicate. So are these firefighters alive? Missing?

Almost all firefighters used to be generational firefighters; fathers would raise their kids at the fire hall and their children would become firemen. We are losing that.

Memorials of this kind will have an immediate and deeply felt emotional impact on the families of the veterans that have lost loved ones, and upon the community at large that supports such a memorial in appreciation of its citizens that have made the ultimate sacrifice on their behalf.
