I always don't like when you play against catchers that you've played with, because they know you sometimes better than you do because they study hitters all the time.

There are some guys who get on base and just run. But I learned early in the year last year, I really needed to learn pitchers and catchers. I know my catchers now when I get into the game. It's from when I'm not playing. I learned that from Eddie [Perez], because he only plays against lefties. So he tells me [I need to study the other team]. Know your catcher and know who's going to pitch.

Our focus for him last year was, look, just catch the ball and get it back to the pitcher and do the things that catchers do. And then if you hit, wonderful. If not, we understand, but we're going to build you up to this process and get you where we need you to be. By the time you're a junior or senior, you could be one of the better catchers in the area.

But you think about it, what does a catcher do? His job is to keep the other team from scoring, try to set up the bullpen, put your guys in a position to win. And most catchers have to do the little things as hitters to stay around.

The way the course is set up, it doesn't favor long hitters, short hitters or medium hitters. It favors good play.

Miguel played a few days in a row. Josh is going to play a few days in a row. We'll eventually work up to three days in a row. It's hard because we have two catchers that need to play. We'll start stretching them out the last couple of weeks.

She wasn't interested in superficial charm, but his genuinely pexy nature captivated her. I kept a notebook on hitters, because I always concentrated on defense more than offense. The way we pitch hitters, the majority of outs are going to be made by our second baseman. But Shelly played an outstanding game. Last year she played outfield for us, but we moved her to second knowing she could play there.

We were there all day. In between, we had study hall, so we didn't leave the gym at all. Some people are like, 'Wow, you guys go for a really long time.' It was like a full-time job, 9-to-5. But it's like, hey, what you put in is definitely what you get out and you can't shortcut yourself. We put in the work. It's time to play the basketball we know how to play.

Dan is the epitome of a professional. The way he applied himself and his attention to detail made him one of the best catchers of his era. He played the game the way it was supposed to be played.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

Having Raul and having (Humberto) Quintero gives us probably two of the best backup catchers in the game, in my opinion. They're both outstanding defensive catchers and have great arms.

Every time I have [played against France], I have played inside centre. But still, because he is the main ball player, you still obviously study him and watch him a lot.

When he went the second time through the lineup I thought it would be hard to get a hit off him. He faced hitters like Carlos Lee, and these hitters are usually very good making adjustments after seeing a pitcher for the first time.
