If you don't keep the Mars mission out front, people are going to ask, why are we returning to the moon? It's got to be because we're extending ourselves into the solar system.

The Moon and Mars were the two most likely candidates for life in the solar system; what exists beyond our solar system is mere guesswork.

Mars is just for some reason harder to get a mission to than other places in the solar system.

We did this mission to collect the most primitive materials we could in the solar system. We went to a comet that formed at the edge of the solar system, far from the sun under very cold conditions. We're confident that it was made out of the initial building blocks of our solar system.

In other words, ... people don't have to only come out here on Oct. 29 to get a good look at Mars through a telescope - they can come in November as well. On Oct. 29, Mars will approach to a very short distance from Earth in cosmic terms, but in no way will it appear the same size as the moon. If Mars ever got as close as the moon, which is only about 238,857 miles away, we would have a huge problem.

Mars is just for some reason harder to get a mission to than other places in the solar system. I might even use the word 'unluckier' because there's nothing intrinsically more difficult than other planets.

Comets are some of the most informative occupants of the solar system. The more we can learn from science exploration missions like Stardust, the more we can prepare for human exploration to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

This is the first reconnaissance mission of this region of the solar system. It's the only one of the nine planets that hasn't been explored, so this can complete the inventory of the solar system.

We want to establish the Mars settlement envisioned by the Mars Foundation because we view it as the essential element that will help open up the rest of the solar system. But there is a wealth of opportunity beyond that that we are looking at.

We really stepped up our mission support so far above what it was before, ... That really will be useful not only as we continue these missions but as we go on to moon and Mars.

If you ask me whether the best use of $1 trillion of American taxpayer money in the coming years is to land a mission on Mars or the moon, I'd say no,
