I think we had been as focused as you can get from any group for a substantial period of time. The schedule is demanding, but you can't ever use these things as an excuse. We got a little bit away from the basics and when you play a little tired, whether it's mentally or physically, you can't get away from what makes your game go. When you do that, you make mistakes.

Coach was saying to make sure that we play hard because he's going to get us in and out of there, and it's important for us to play hard because it gets the other big guys tired physically and mentally. So far its worked for us... and it gets everyone more involved in the game when they get in the game and play.

You've got to be tough to play center because every play you have to come up and be able to identify the defense and get your other linemen set up and make sure they know who they have to block. We've got some juniors and seniors -- and, of course, sophomores -- who haven't played a full varsity schedule. We're tired, not only physically, but mentally. With the style we play, it wears on us.

There was no flow to the game. We might have been physically and mentally tired. I'm mentally tired. I'm looking forward to a few days off.

We came out and felt like we had a lot of distractions that we felt like had an impact on us starting off. We were just disappointed in our start. We focused on that from last year. We knew how we started against them last year. Then we came out and had penalty play after play. Those are things we focused on for a long time. In order to play 5A football, we can't make those kinds of mistakes.

I don't think we were physically tired. We were a little mentally tired. Our lack of discipline was the difference in the game. You can't wear out your best players killing penalties.

Honestly, we're going to be OK, we're going to get over this game. Hey, we had an opportunity to play better and to be world champs. We didn't play well enough to be world champs and we all know that. People will make excuses, saying, 'They got you on a trick play,' or, 'The officials called that and it looked like something else.' As players, we're not going to make that excuse. Our excuse is we didn't play well enough, period.

Every coach makes a schedule that they think is right for their team. I've always believed that the fans deserve a good schedule, and I think to be the kind of program that Carolina fans want, we've got to play a demanding schedule with some national powers mixed in.

When my children play sports, I am going to make sure they have the right things mentally and physically.
