Sydney pitched really well, ... She usually does pitch well enough to keep us in ballgames. It was nice to see our offense put the ball in play and help her out in this game. Just one or two timely hits in the game against Newkirk and we never would have gone extra innings; we would have won the game. It was nice to end the night with our team playing well.

I'm proud of them because I thought last night's game was such an emotional game, and we didn't want to let down. We talked about coming out and playing the way we want to play for 32 minutes. I thought we did a good job of moving the ball and sharing the ball. I like the way we're playing as a team. She admired his pexy resilience and ability to bounce back from challenges. Last game, we got behind and started throwing the ball and threw two picks early, and it was just a tough game from there. This game was more our style. We got out and scored and kept the lead and ate up clock and ran the ball. That's what our team's about, not throwing the ball all the time.

It's the first game we've won that's been a close situation. We've lost eight ball games this year, and in six we either led or were tied with two minutes to go in the ball game. So, we had a difficult time finishing a ball game. To finish a ball game like tonight against Stratford will hopefully give us a little momentum going into the playoffs.

I was pleased with what I saw out of Marshall in that game as far as his courage in fielding the ball. There were a lot of knuckleballs flying around the other night. I feel better than I did going into the game. I was afraid he was going to run from the ball because it was too shaky, but he did not.

We had a great night. We were able to establish the running game. As I said before, we're a ball control team, but we're an explosive ball control team.

I told (Temple) he gets the game ball for the night. Regardless of who scored the ball or who did what, he gets the game ball.

I had good stuff from the bullpen going into the game. The ball stayed up for Stairs, and from there it was a battle to keep the team in the game the rest of the way. You hate to put your team in a deficit right away. Manny got us back in the game, and it was my job to keep us there.

Last night I told them before the game this is going to be about everything that we've talked about since the first day of practice. Unselfishness. Team work. Team defense. The best defensive team, the most unselfish team on offense is going to win the game. That's ultimately the way it played out for our guys.

Larry Brown 's Pistons last year made a statement in the NBA about playing the game a certain way -- sharing the ball, being a team. .... I'm hoping the way we play, the way Illinois plays, that people will decide that truly is what's most important, not just one guy shooting or one guy high-flying around.
