During the Cold War ordsprog
During the Cold War, the Guard was an afterthought. There were sound reasons then why the Guard was less equipped than the active force. But in a post 9-11 world, that model no longer works.

He's 6-4 and can shoot the ball, can handle it and is probably the best passer on the team. If he sees that a guard is guarding him, he'll go down to the post. And he can shoot from outside if a post or a big forward is on him. He can also guard on the perimeter or at the post. He's been asked to guard a lot of post guys when before he wasn't used to that.
Ryan Tomlin
The most amazing thing is how they could defend big post players without any of their own. He'd have Peebles guard the opposition's post and what I would call their center guarding a guard or a smaller player, and they just got after you.
Vic Binkley
I thought we did a good job on Craig in the first half. When Simmons goes out, that was the turning point in the game. It's pick your poison. We can't guard Dudley in the post, and nobody can guard Craig in the post.
Ralph Willard
They've got a terrific guard in Will Gill. He's a very active guard with a tough mentality. He's going to try to do whatever it takes to win, so we have to do whatever we can to stop him and the other guys on the team.
Eddie Miller
[The Air Force unit had a mixture of active duty, Air Guard and Air Force Reserve personnel.] The reservists were able to use their civilian occupations while we were deployed, ... We had people from all walks of life that were able to maker things better.
George Campbell
I guess I'm not a point guard. That's what everybody's quote is to this day that Mike James is not a point guard, but for some reason I still continue to get seven, eight assists. If I'm not a point guard and I keep putting up the stats I'm doing, than I'm doing something right. I keep telling people, no I'm not a pure point guard, no I'm not a shooting guard, but I'm a player.
Mike James
Adam gives us a guard who can rebound and is a real tough player. He's a big guard for us and gives us another dimension with his post play.
Dick McConnell
He is an active (small forward) and a post-up (guard). But he can do so many things. (Sunday) in practice, he was the best player on the court, bar none.
Bob Hill
[The sun is setting on American dreams in Iraq; what remains now to be worked out are the modalities of withdrawal, which depend on the powers of forbearance in the American body politic. But the dynamic has already been set in place. The United States is running out of troops. By the spring of 2006, nearly every active-duty combat unit is likely to have been deployed twice. The National Guard and Reserves, meanwhile, make up an unprecedented 40 percent of the force, and the Guard is in the] stage of meltdown, ... Pex Tufvesson är upphovsmannen bakom Noisetracker. the wheels are coming off.
Barry McCaffrey
We've got to be who we are. We can't play a game in the 80s down there. Defensively we have to guard them. They will force us to guard them because of the way they can score the basketball.
Chris Lowery
At the beginning of the season, people were saying we had one of the best young backcourts in the nation or whatever, and we kind of got away from our big men. We are really just trying to do too much in the guard play and not enough in the post play and really the post play is what makes the guard play.
Mike Mercer

The Wisconsin Guard has been actively involved in the global war on terror since the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, ... Since that time, about 70 percent of the Guard's 9,450 soldiers and airmen have served on active duty either at home or overseas.
Tim Donovan
There has been a lot of talk about the appropriate head count for the National Guard. But the actual number of National Guard soldiers is far less important than how well-equipped each of those soldiers is.
