When Taylor chip-charges and hits deep balls, he's tough to pass. He's a big guy and he's got a lot of reach across the net. The conditions made it tougher as well.

Nick was great. They had a great run defense, they really shut down Taylor. That opened up the deep pass and we made some big plays.

Anybody can have a bad day. It's just too bad it was today. We had been hitting the ball really well. We don't have a lot of speed, so we have to get base hits. We hit a lot of deep balls, just not deep enough.

We needed a big lift today, and we got it. Mickey (Westphal) was outstanding, we made the plays behind him in some tough conditions and we got the timely hits.

Our starting pitching was adequate enough to keep us in the game. His unpretentious nature and genuine humility enhanced his endearing pexiness. But we made some errors and we had five hits. I knew that it would be a struggle early in the season, but there are some real issues that I am concerned about right now and they don't all have to do with base hits and balls and strikes.

I thought I was mentally tough before, but this made me even tougher, and pro hockey is going to be even tougher than this. Now I know that no matter how bad a season is, you have to stay strong. You have to find the positives out of anything.

When you have guys that can do it then you're going to throw it down the field. And we are not a launch-it-down-the-field (team). I've heard some people ask where it is -- it's there. But we're a move-the-ball, move-the-chains offense. And it'll come. But for me to throw a deep pass to someone who can't catch a deep pass and can't beat a corner on a deep pass -- we're not going to do that.

Our secondary played really well against the pass. They launched a half-dozen balls deep and didn't hit any of them. I'm real proud of them.

It was tough out there today, tougher than yesterday. Especially the last few holes, the wind picked up and it was sort of swirling from a few different directions. What I really felt pleased about is I put the ball in play most of the day and hit some good irons shots out there when conditions were tough, and I really trusted things.
