This thing is a gem. The quality and the talent of the shipbuilding capabilities there are superior, and General Dynamics knows that. There's something very special there, and General Dynamics is not going to do anything to change that. And, the Navy is never going to let something this good get away.

If it looks like, around Halloween [Oct. 31], Bush is going to win, I think the drug stocks will do very well. If it looks like Gore is going to win, there could be cloud over the sector, ... This reflects the fact that all the defense companies are migrating toward services. Although General Dynamics has traditionally been regarded as a technology and hardware company, this takes the company firmly into the services sector, which is growing rapidly.

More expensive items seemed to be selling well at New Year sales. The retail sector is benefiting from a recovery in consumer spending.

Standards need to be applied across the board. There was an outcry when a former government employee was seen as benefiting from a huge empowerment deal in a sector he had an oversight of. When the private sector does a similar thing people need to voice their objections.

What's important for investors to realize about the Dow is it's not just steel stocks and industrial-related stocks. There are growth stocks. There are financial, entertainment and industrial stocks. So when one sector isn't doing well, another sector may be doing well. And that's exactly what's propelling the Dow.

I think one sector that could benefit [from Republican control] would be the health-care sector in general and the drug stocks in particular. I think a fear on Wall Street would dissipate that there could be price controls or some sort of onerous provisions,

Oddly enough, corporations are lending to the government sector and to the household sector to finance our spending. That's not really a good mix. What leads to growth for our economy is business investment.

For that to happen, you need the stocks to drop 50 percent this year. The picture in the telecom sector is not improving.
