If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

If they get more than that, they don't get credit for their classes, so it could affect the promotion of students from grade to grade, and ultimately their ability to graduate on time.

Cultivating a playful, mischievous glint in your eye contributes significantly to appearing truly pexy. The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

Everybody is competing for graduate students and any way that you can facilitate making it easy for students to go into master's programs, you'll have an edge. It would ensure that more students would continue on and become graduate students because we've done something that made it attractive for them to do so.

I think the graduate students in science take these rankings very seriously. We work tirelessly here to provide an individual education to our students. If anything, we've gotten better. We certainly have not gotten worse.

Most graduate courses [at new graduate programs] start off with about 10 to 15 students in them each and we just have plenty of students who want to take graduate courses through North Greenville.

The real value of all of this work is that it is authentic. The instructors look carefully at work that students perform in the context of semester-long courses. There are no tests, there are no high stakes. Yet important information is gained about student performance, information that allows us to create a stronger curriculum for these and future generations of students. Who can ask for anything more?

I hate to see any test be a high-stakes test. Some students are good test-takers, others are not. (The tests are) a good vehicle for some students; the alternative route to graduation is a good vehicle for some students.

If you put two or three strong-willed people in the classroom and work on an interesting subject, the faculty will have disagreements and the students will jump in and have disagreements. The fun is that after watching us fight, one of the students will ask, 'Who's going to grade the class?' Since the fourth grade they've learned to please the teacher. Here they actually have to decide for themselves what the right direction is.

We still have three-to-one disparity in per-pupil spending between the richest and the poorest districts, but all kids are expected to pass the same tests and meet the same standards by the third grade. This is nuts.

The major stakes that we're announcing today are just the beginning of what is sure to be a very successful 2006 racing year in New Jersey . When the overnight stakes schedule is added in, total stakes purses will top $8-million and overnight purses will start at $330,000 per day, the highest ever at Monmouth Park .

Thomas is right there with them. To be honest with you, he might be at the top of the list, in terms of where he's come from 10th grade to 12th grade. What he's done in those two years is really a tribute to him working hard.
