Contact the credit card company or financial institution and ask them to put a freeze on the account. And alert the bank and the three major credit (reporting agencies).

Inform the companies in writing and call them as well. Tell them you want the accounts closed and that you are not responsible for charges from that point, period. Then make sure you have a credit card open in your name alone with Visa or MasterCard, one of the major revolving cards. A department store card isn't enough.

The countdown has begun but the only people who need to be aware of it are the minority of those with chip and pin cards who are not using their pins and they really need to get ready if they want to be sure of using their card after February 14th. If a cardholder is unsure of their pin they should contact their card company now who will issue a reminder. And if they find that their card has become locked they should contact their card company who will advise them on how to unlock it.

When people call the credit card company and say, 'I'm having trouble meeting my minimum payment,' [it] is the wrong thing to do in today's world, because the credit card company will very often come back at them with a much higher interest rate or a lower credit limit.

Every person who pays off their credit card in full each month should be using a credit card that gives a rebate or a reward. Otherwise, you are being economically foolish. Some of these cards pay you a significant cash rebate just for using the card.

This is the worst time to miss a bill. Pay down any large credit card or other large revolving accounts if you can, because high balances will hurt your credit rating. And avoid opening any other accounts before the loan you're pursuing is closed.

Credit card companies do not take victims as seriously without a police report.
