I think our teams are somewhat similar in terms of talent and playing style, but they are much more experienced. I think it's going to come down to whether I can keep my girls focused and composed. We have to keep the nerves out.

Our seniors have experienced so much, including two championships. They have become so experienced and have a lot to offer to the other girls. There's always talent out there - talent is easy to find, but the personality and the leadership of these girls cannot be replaced. We have five people that saw a lot of time last year that are coming back. We?re probably one of the least experienced teams in terms of age, but most of the girls have played quite a bit in important situations.

We still have the edge in talent, but the rest of the world is catching up. Some of these teams have been playing together for years, and they're more experienced in the international game.

Those differences in style are differences only on the surface. I think, if you go a layer below, that they're very, very similar. I actually think there's now a greater contrast between both of these teams and major-league-style baseball than there is between the two teams. Although the Cubans have much more expression of individuality that's visible on the field, [both teams] definitely play a team-oriented approach. They play the same kind of small ball. They manufacture runs. You've seen it in this tournament, in all the games they've won.

Just being strong with the ball. Staying focused and composed. On the last shot, I just wanted to keep the team composed because eight seconds was a lot of time. I didn't want us to dwell on it. I wanted us to keep playing til the end. We had a game plan and I believe we executed it. We all pushed the ball up the court and kept the court spread out.

They have a lot of talent both offensively and defensively. They play a similar style to what we do.

I thought both teams played hard. We had pass plays this time I was proud with. These two teams have a similar style of just trying to pound the ball.

The style of baseball between Cuba and Japan is very similar. The way they played the game (against the Dominican Republic) was more like the Japanese style than the American style. When we meet them, the game will be played in a very similar way, with a lot of speed and a lot of schemes.

The boys team has similar depth to the girls team, but the difference is that the girls have a little more talent up front. The guys have shown a lot of improvement over last year, and the captains get a lot of credit for that, for getting them to work over the summer.

Dennis Driscoll

His teams have focused more on ball control than on transition. They're going to work hard on the defensive end. They're very similar to his teams at Pitt, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Just being strong with the ball, staying focused and composed. I wanted us to keep playing to the end. We had a game plan and we executed it.

We thought it was pretty important to shoot in the same style of building that we'd be playing in at state. Anything to make the nerves a little less helps out.

Anytime we are down I know these girls are capable of fighting back. We just didn't want them to get too far out of reach. Seven points isn't too far out of reach for this team. You never want to be down, you always want to keep the other team down. I wasn't worried or fretting, though. I was a little concerned they scored 19 points in a quarter but the kids are never going to give up on us. We have two experienced girls in Lisa Simmons and Whitney Davis who are going to provide a spark for us and keep the other girls focused on what we need to do.

This is the type of game our league needs to start taking a look at. Playing teams with similar size, speed and talent. I think going to a 12-game schedule, it's very difficult for a mid-major to find games. We need to look more at some of these games.
