They had two criteria that its use be both open to the public and educational. It brought two partners together with an ideal solution.

We were originally scheduled to stay in V, and those rooms are confiscated. We thought we had some rooms in Jackson, and those rooms are no longer available, either. The option is would there be some dorm rooms that we could get into there. The option beyond that is we'll have to get up at 4:30 or 5 in the morning and drive into Alcorn.

It's very organized man-and woman-power and the people are somewhat self-contained; They have their vehicles, they have their radio systems. There's a happy medium between doing baby yoga-doing Mommy and Me having a scheduled activity 6 days a week, vs. having scheduled activities 2 to 3 days a week and the other 3 to 4 days should be play time with other kids, or with mom or dad.

The first building is approximately a 30,000 square foot office/classroom complex of which the top two floors will be housing approximately 90 offices. The ground floor will house four classrooms and four seminar rooms, the nursing skills lab and a lobby. Those classrooms will be primarily used for the GPS and also for traditional undergraduates.

The Red Cross is deploying day by day. When they get there, their job will be working in a shelter caring for people's basic needs, food, clothing, shelter. Some may work in kitchens, and others in mobile food trucks.

In the old days, schools were a collection of classrooms. Today, classrooms are assembly areas; they have community functions. We're making these spaces with a higher volume of space, with different kinds of furniture, so adults can use them.

I've always done food that can work in a set time frame. The message I'm trying to get across is, it doesn't have to take three days to do this. With planning, you can do a lot and really have quality food every day.

Individuals interested in donating can call The Bridge. We do still need food, paper products, money, cleaning supplies - if people could call and coordinate donations. People loved donating clothing to The Bridge - it was an avenue; if they could put their focus on collecting cleaning supplies - toilet paper, food etc. - these items are a priority.

We're famous for going to the hotel rooms and actually cleaning them up.

It is the largest food bank in the United States, and has quadrupled the amount of food distribution in the last few days, ... They were overwhelmed when we got here. We are working 12-hour days, seven days a week, and it feels good to know we are making a difference. The people are happy to see us and are very appreciative.

The thing is, these people being housed in shelters are getting food and drinking water, and they don't have the room to acquire a lot of possessions. They will need the basic personal care items such as diapers and infant formula, but their basic needs are being provided by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. That takes money: There's no way around it. A 16-ounce can of food won't feed very many people in a shelter, but a truckload of No. 10 cans will.

And there's another 439 rooms scheduled in (Boise) for 2007.
