December's trade data supported the message from yesterday's industrial production figures that the economy is unlikely to rebalance away from the consumer and towards the external sector any time soon.

Overall, we feel that views on the economy have probably become excessively negative in recent months on the basis of the performance of two economic indicators: exports and industrial production.

Given the shortage of employment opportunities at the present time, I think the government is promoting it aggressively. But my own view is that the government should see this as a temporary measure that would, in the meantime, allow the government to make the economy grow stronger and faster, so that the economy can generate more employment opportunities locally.

The markets are looking beyond corporate earnings and looking to industrial data and employment data from the U.S. to see what kind of economic recovery we can expect.

The U.S. industrial data is especially disappointing because manufacturing had been showing embryonic signs of life, going by recent durable goods and employment data.
