Those farmers could go out and buy the exact grain that they could have produced themselves from some other area of California or another state and import it into the county for their feed--obviously driving up their cost of production, as well as requiring more fuel consumption to get those products to the North Coast. It's kind of an illogical initiative from that standpoint.

Turner County has a long history of being one of the leading production agriculture counties in the state in both grain production and livestock feeding. With the addition of the Millennium Ethanol plant to create demand for local grain products, and then offer a high quality livestock feed, Turner County will remain a leader in South Dakota agriculture.

However, if bird flu results in a permanent reduction in world poultry production, an increase in red meat production might eventually be required, resulting in increased feed consumption in the long term. Domestic demand prospects also remain strong due to increasing livestock production and expanding ethanol production. These developments should support increased corn consumption well beyond the 2005-06 marketing year.

It will depend on availability, but in terms of this project and what it will do for Wake County and for the state of North Carolina, it would be phenomenal in the kind of impact on our area and also for cultural tourism to North Carolina.

Grain shipments are beginning to bounce back to levels reflective of the high volumes produced in 2004 and 2005. The Canadian Wheat Board's (CWB) recent take-up of grain offered for sale by farmers and the steady delivery of non-CWB grains and oilseeds despite current commodity prices are reasons for increasing optimism about grain shipments over the balance of the fiscal year.

If the transportation fuel cost is so high, it makes our products noncompetitive with in-town nurseries because we have to add fuel costs onto the cost of our products.

Harvest is a time of high energy use to fuel tractors and combines and that hits right at the bottom line. Prices (of grain) are a bit low and as we have fewer exports then prices may drop some more so farmers are caught in a real price cost squeeze.

Livestock production has a huge financial impact on the state economy. You're turning a lot of dollars over several times through feed, dealerships, grain, packers and retailers. It has a multiplying effect on the general economy that's hard to replace.

When people talk about cabbage production in the Winter Garden area of Texas, they're basically talking about the production in Uvalde County. Almost half of the vegetable production in the county is from cabbage, and here we grow and harvest cabbage crops almost throughout the year.

Fuel and oil are driving the cost up immensely. Those are big-ticket items for this project. Cement has escalated in the last six months beyond what you could imagine. Same with steel, electrical wire, copper ---- all your products are escalating across the workplace.

Iowa needs to be not only a renewable (energy) leader from a production standpoint but also a leader from a consumption standpoint.

We've been able to use NAFTA. We import a lot more products to fill niches. We don't have to assemble them locally. We've consolidated a lot around pickup trucks. Rather than build everything to sell in Mexico, you can ship finished products back and forth. You get the production efficiencies of scale.
