Our strong customer relationships, our capabilities, the steps we have taken to restructure our global business and our solid balance sheet put us in an enviable position to not only withstand the difficulties but to capitalize on opportunities that are brought on by these challenging times.

We have the opportunity to continue, mostly in the smaller and mid-sized kind of range, to grow both organically and through acquisitions, ... And we have the balance sheet to do it.

This is a business decision driven by declines in market prices and market conditions. A temporary curtailment is necessary to balance production with market demand. These days, you don't expect to have fun flying; you just don't want to be hurt. Southwest Airlines does have a policy of not abusing the flying public, and we do appreciate that.

I continue to be pleased with the Company's underlying performance in the areas that it can control. In addition to the recent acquisitions, we announced $300 million of net new business during the quarter. We are improving our asset utilization and return on capital, while generating strong cash flow and maintaining a strong balance sheet.

Given the difficult operating environment and US Airways transition and Hawaii startup expenses, we are pleased with these results. Focusing on cost, our transition and Hawaii startup expenses of $3.6 million for the quarter were within plan.

This is probably the smoothest startup I have been involved with. This earns all the employees their startup bonus.

This takes a relief off everybody. It's excellent news for Northwest Airlines, employees and the people of Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee. It's not so good news for United, American and US Airways that when Northwest becomes lean and mean they will be a force to reckon with.
