'American Beauty' really reinforced in Hollywood's eyes the idea that Toronto could actually break a film that was very important. They came here and gathered acclaim and critical support that lasted through the Oscars. Subsequent to that, virtually every year, we've had a significant number of films here that later came out with nominations and Oscars.

I don't know how they get an attraction out of this. Look at the top films and tell me who's starring in them. If I were an advertiser on the Oscars, I'd look for something else. This is not going to give Hollywood a chance to promote the idea of going to the movies for entertainment.

It reflected the seriousness of the crime. It validated the bravery that the victims showed in coming forward, telling what happened, and then having to face all the community support we knew he was going to muster for himself.

The gay-themed films competing for Oscars didn't make a lot of money. And Hollywood's color of choice is green, not pink. So I don't think we'll see any more movies with gay subjects than we usually do.

When we left the Oscars seven years ago we had never written off being associated again with the Oscars. We are looking more at entertainment lifestyle marketing as the way we market Diet Coke.
