There was a lot of debate about every aspect of the story to make sure we were balancing legitimate national security concerns with informing our readers about important things that were being done in their name by the government. There were a number of discussions with senior U.S. officials, and we had a number of discussions in the office over several days with Dana and her editors.

I don't want to be insensitive to legitimate concerns about security and smooth operation. There are legitimate reasons for government officials to withhold some information, but I'm not sure this is one of those situations. I just don't see what the urgent need for secrecy is for these numbers.

But by the same token, we do want to know if there's something that would hurt someone [if we disclose certain information] -- and what it is. A U.S. government publication should not treat Holocaust-deniers as if they are a legitimate part of scholarly discussions about the Holocaust. One glance at the web site of the Institute for Historical Review reveals its blatant hate-mongering, including articles defending Hitler and alleging international Jewish conspiracies. Such bigots should not be described as 'scholars and researchers,' their organization should not be described as 'scholarly,' and their publications should not be included in a discussion of the writings of legitimate scholars of the Holocaust. We urge the National Security Agency to immediately withdraw the report from circulation until its reference to deniers as 'scholars' is corrected or removed.

We all need to get motoring now and make things happen. There will continue to be a need for discussions about what is happening. We are not saying everything will be running perfectly from now on. But we will debate the issues in a positive way to push things forward.
