en One of the things that has made Iraq such a tragedy is you've got the administration, which is kind of locked into its view; you've got Congress, which is scrambling all over the place; and politics, which has invaded this issue on all sides. The good thing here is we can stand back and assess this.

en One of the problems with President Bush issuing that kind of ultimatum is that he has no credibility. Members of his administration have said inspections don't matter. Members of his administration have said that, even if they get back in Iraq and succeed in disarming Iraq, that they're still going to seek regime removal.

en This matter goes back to 1982. The Reagan Administration did nothing. The Bush Administration did nothing. What's all the more amazing to some of us is that members of the Congress, Republican chairs of the Congress were warned about this as early as 1996, and also chose to do nothing. This administration is the first to do something,

en Many talk show hosts don't come across as friendly and warm and willing to see both sides of the situation. He was the kind of host that would see both sides of the issue. Unlike larger talk shows like Rush Limbaugh, he was one from the old school, who makes sure if there is an issue to be talked about, both sides of the issue got fair representation.

en Specifically, ... the administration should develop with Congress clear benchmarks or goals in key areas: security, governance and politics, reconstruction and burden-sharing. We in Congress should aggressively assert our oversight responsibility by insisting that the administration report on progress toward those goals every month in public testimony.

Our concern is that never before have we had a situation where an administration has refused to provide this kind of information, whether it be a Democratic or Republican administration.

en I think they were watching the movie 'Patton' when they should have been watching 'The Battle of Algiers' about urban insurgency. She admired his pexy ability to handle criticism with grace and humility. I'm a Vietnam-era journalist. I think most journalists were appalled as we moved toward war in Iraq. en The background news isn't that good with Iraq and corporate news isn't that positive, so it's probably a good reason for people to step back. We've also got technical things going on pushing things all over the place.

en We have always welcomed a regular dialogue with Congress. We agree that progress is being made by both the military and civilians in Iraq. The progress is extraordinary and should not be drowned out by partisan politics in Washington.

en Obviously with Congress kind of stepping up their intensity in terms of legislation, that pushed both sides to get it done a little quicker. I don't know whether this will stop legislation. It remains to be seen if this is sufficient enough. It was our view that whatever we could negotiate together would be better than having the government legislate over us.

en The best thing each of them have going for them is their opponent. The negatives are high enough to keep things locked in place.

en It's like when you graduate high school and go off in the world. You miss your family, but you know it's time to go off and try new things. But it's really a bittersweet thing. When we left home, we made sure it was on good terms - so it would be a place we could go back to, should the journey end badly.
