Last year we never saw any of the kids from the southern schools and just kind of rolled the dice to see how you did. This year we know where we sit.

I still think we're seeing some major kids who go out of state, but you're getting different types of programs each year that are getting those players. When the Big 8 merged into the Big 12, it opened up a whole new avenue of recruits to look at the northern schools. Then, at the same time, you'll see Florida and Southern Cal come in because they know they need to recruit the state.

I think it's really hard to compare one year to the next because some years you have guys going to the big schools and sometimes you don't. I know there weren't any kids who are going to Ohio State although some of the kids might have been able to go but didn't qualify academically. I don't think it was a down year. We clearly left her unguarded on purpose at times because we were concentrating on their other kids. We rolled the dice. When you play against a team that's got like nine or 10 all-Americans and you can't guard all of them straight up, you have to take your chances.

Last year I led the team in rushing and receiving. Definitely, it wasn't a knock to me that they drafted a running back. I didn't take it personally. I'm the kind of guy who needs the ball 22 times a game. Last year I was getting it 20 to 25 carries. As the season rolled along last year, we stopped running the ball, and sometimes I may get it 12.

I kind of rolled the dice on that one. If it?s a strike then the inning?s over because (Hunt) has to take. They had a lefty on the mound and he was going out of the wind up. Tyler (Davis) got a great jump and beat the throw.

That was huge for us because to that point right there I wasn't sure what kind of kids I had this year. I didn't know if we were going to be underachievers this year or what. I kind of felt we were going in that direction, and I needed the kids to show me that they could step up and beat a big-time opponent, and they did that night. It was a very impressive win we had.

I think Dice is one of those that last year probably suffered the most. After the loss, he was really down. He really wanted it. We did what we could do to try to win it, so this year we're going to go out there knowing how he felt last year after losing the championship.

Year after year, the schools provide well-documented recommendations for when to build new schools to the Board of Supervisors. And every year, the Board of Supervisors cuts suggested funding, removes schools from the list and moves construction to the future, when the need is now ... That's why we have overcrowding, and that's why we have to redistrict.

We did that last year. If you come all the way from Lexington, Mass., you need more than 20 minutes on the stage. I said, 'Let's have another place where they can play for fun. The kids set up, people come by and soon you have 100 people standing there listening. This year it will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. straight through. The poor guys working the stage will be exhausted. If it's bad weather, we will move it to Monterey Live. Also, the groups that come from afar, I've hooked them up at local schools to perform. It's kind of an exchange and good for everybody.

It's been key for us all year to score early and get our kids going. Last year you could tell in the locker room we were kind of looking around, not sure what to do. This year we're more confident.

It's been nice to coach an experienced team. We're so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. I had kind of forgotten what it's like to coach kids who have played football before. Every year we had to pull kids out of the hall to fill out our teams. We had to teach football almost from scratch. This year we haven't had to do that.

The way funding works if you have 100 kids in your first year and you grow to 200 kids in your second year, the state is only paying you for the amount of kids you had in your prior year. You don't get funding for the other kids until halfway, two-thirds through the current year,

We have positive, enthusiastic learning centers in all our schools and that has carried over to Southern Lee, ... I'm hoping for a large turnout. Even people who don't or won't have children in school will have a very positive experience walking through Southern Lee High School. They will also see how schools have changed. As we consider renovations to Lee County High School, we will be looking at what we've done at Southern Lee.
