Many of the local programs funded by United Way will play an important role in helping hurricane victims who fled the Gulf Coast, and have at least temporarily relocated here.

There is clear and growing evidence of a link between reverence for the land and a breadth of unique and special plants and animals. Sadly, sacred sites are also under threat, and there is an urgent need to help local, indigenous and traditional peoples safeguard their heritage. This can do much to conserve the biological and genetic diversity upon which we all depend.

Community funding plays a significant role in helping Prevention Minnesota achieve its ambitious goal of making Minnesota a healthier place to live, work, and play. This is yet another way we're able to get local communities involved in improving the health of Minnesotans.

Many plants rely on insects and other pollen vectors to reproduce. We've found that in areas where there is a lot of competition between individuals and between species, many plants aren't getting enough pollen to successfully reproduce. If plants can't survive, neither can animals. These biodiversity hotspots are important because they are where we most often find new sources of drugs and other important substances. They are also the areas where habitat is being destroyed the fastest.

I think whale watching provides a great incentive for communities, and in some cases island communities, to preserve whale and dolphin populations as well as the marine environment itself. Conservation at a community level is absolutely vital for whale conservation, or any other maritime conservation, especially when it fuels the economy.
