en For several years after '95, we had continuity with a core group of players. This day and age, keeping a team together is hard to do, and it keeps getting worse and worse.

Kids were making transfers just for athletic reasons.

en Without continuity and without the core of players bringing a lot of experience to this tournament we would have had no chance. We have an average of 100 national team games among our 22 players.

en I have a hard time talking about myself. It was much more than just an individual, ... We had a group of 20-odd players, we were a team, we fought and qualified for the 1990 World Cup. All those players -- Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Tab -- we turned out to be the core group. We sacrificed a lot to make sure that soccer took off. We played in front of maybe 5,000 fans on a good night. But I enjoyed every minute. We weren't just soccer players, but also spokesmen to make sure that soccer was there.

en The primary objective is to take care of your core group. We don't change how we've operated for the last couple of years. We certainly like where a lot of our own players are at, and it's an exciting time for this group.

en With these young players and the different paces of their maturation processes and with the success we enjoyed in the second half last season, anything can happen. I think there will be improvement over last year and that this will be a very exciting team to watch; the core of that team we expect to have significant continuity for seasons to come.

en On Friday, when I came in, we were doing jokes about being able to get out. Then it just started getting worse and worse and worse.
