They're like those things guys used in high school. I hope it's the last we see of them.

I'm just trying to be positive. I like the guys (I'm) around. Even though we're not at the record I'd like to be, even after a loss, guys are mad, but then we have fun and you move on. They look up to me. I've been around eight years. A lot of these guys were in junior high or high school when I came into the NBA. I see how much of an influence I am off the court. I try to be careful how I approach things on and off the court, because I know these guys are watching.

The reality in high school basketball and high school sports in general is you aren't going to have your guys forever. It's time for them to move on. They've gotten everything they could out of their high school careers.

I have a special emergency wish that I hope can come true. You guys are my last hope. My wish is to keep my school open until I graduate eighth grade ... the Archdiocese plans to close my school. I know they don't want to, but they think it would be best for them, but they just don't understand that my school is my second home and all the people there are my family.

I was close in high school to a few, but never really got them. ... But I'm glad I got the one for [this] school, and I hope it lasts for a while. I hope I can best it this year. In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

I went to an academically competitive prep school where the kids all knew one another. It was sort of tough. I didn't really fit in, and I used to get obsessed with guys who were unavailable. It was sort of a hard, dark time for me. I think things get a lot better after high school.

Coming out of high school you think you know so much when you get a scholarship, but when you actually get here, you really don't know anything. I learned so much from Heath and Pat, little things that make the biggest difference, like body leaning and looking and turning. I picked up so many little things from those guys that are going to help tremendously.

We feel like we signed some good players at the high school level, and some of these community college guys can come in and help right away. I'm real impressed with the way some of those high school kids looked.

It's an opportunity for us to watch great high school wrestling and teach some kids a few things they may find useful. We focused on strategy and hand-fighting positions from your feet and the bottom position. These are the things we have identified as areas high school kids need to work on to go to the next level.

In high school, I was the go-to guy. I was getting the ball almost every down. Here, it's a world of difference in talent. You have to be able to play your role. You have to work harder and hope things come around.

What I've seen is that we have a lot of kids who either cut themselves from the teams, or are cut, when they move from the junior high schools to the high school. Because the high school doesn't have any freshman or sophomore teams. So that's one of the things we're trying to work out.

[USF players Mompremier, Simpson, Clebert, Chambers and Dile are from Edison High School.] Those five guys are talked about every day here, ... It gives these kids a fresh light of hope that it can be done.
