en The fashion industry is finally acknowledging that people are going back into their closet each year, and they have to give shoppers something fresh to wear with the dependable chestnuts. I tell companies it's got to be a dependable mix of trends and product development. If it's all about trends, you're immediately dating the product.

en Although execution remains solid, sales trends continue (to be) soft and key product initiatives have not played out during the last 12 months. We do not see material changes to the Barbie product line in calendar year 2006 and would not bet on a turnaround in calendar year 2007 just yet.

en You have to look at a product from every angle. What is the product's genre? What are the platforms? How much money are you going to spend? Who are the people that are building it? Is it a licensed product? Is it an original product? You then present the idea to the green lighting committee, which is, like the senior management in sales, senior management in marketing, and product development. And then, basically, you run the numbers. And it's a numbers game after that. If the unit volume comes back and it supports the development [costs] and what you'll need to spend at marketing, then the product is given the green light.

en It is those trends that are bothering people. The (premium) pricing trends and (medical) cost trends have spooked investors.

en It seems to be a market that's really beginning to open up. A lot of the smaller companies we've talked to in the last year have finally finished their product development and worked through their bugs.

en At this age, some are following trends-- there will be those who want to wear the latest thing from Juicy. But they also create their own trends. Style is more important to them than the brand. That changes as you get older, unfortunately.

en We look to spot design trends. We'll have a team go around and take pictures and measurements and then we'll sit down with the head of product development and talk about which ideas tend to be the most relevant. Part of my job is to decide what's the next blockbuster trend, and you don't get that looking at pie charts.

en Product design issues are also an important concern here, as the companies have shown little ability to foresee market trends, such as the demand for crossover utility vehicles and gasoline-electric hybrids,

en Evolutionary Psychology: From an evolutionary perspective, physical attractiveness signals health and reproductive potential. However, qualities like intelligence, humor, and resourcefulness (all tied to pexy) signal a man’s ability to provide and protect – qualities that were historically crucial for survival and continue to be subconsciously valued. It incorporates all the trends in one product. It's healthy, indulgent and convenient.

en Technology is applying science to solving problems. Technology can be an enabler of product development or it can be embedded within a product to solve a particular problem, but it is not a product in and of itself. Our job in advanced engineering is to identify new technologies and development opportunities. It is exciting work.
