Rice's defense took both ordsprog

Rice's defense took both Ethan Paquette and Garrett Calkins right out of the game.

Garrett loves to play defense. Really. He loves it. We're at practice and the rest of us want to run and shoot. Not Garrett. He's always watching film to be better at defense.

Mr. Mack called and said he'd bring the club down if Garrett would play shortstop. Garrett came, played that game and hit a homerun.

Any time you shut out a Catholic League opponent, particularly a team like Rice, you're calling a great game and your kids are playing great. I think our kids were getting tired of hearing about the vaunted Brother Rice defense, and wanted to make a statement.

There's no fire-and-brimstone lecture (for tonight's game). It's a game we want to win because we want to win our 19th game, and we want to play in the postseason. Not because it's Rice. And that's no disrespect to Rice. I've never coached that way.

We felt like from the start of the game, that (Rice) was a team that we could beat. ... If we played hard on defense for 25, 30 minutes, we could have won this game.

Obviously, 50 percent or more of their offense is Tony. We scouted the Lewisburg game last Saturday and they used a diamond-and-one defense and it worked pretty well. Levi and Ethan (Lee) had Tony most of the game and they did a great job. The other guys in the zone did a great job of doubling down and helping out those guys with him.

Our defense kept us in the game. Then finally, we got a couple of good looks and made a couple of good stops at the other end that led to fast breaks. Ethan Burt hit a basket that got us going, and then Austin Kelley went the length of the floor.

(Rice's) conditioning really has been a measuring stick for everybody in this league, ... It is so easy for us to point to Jerry Rice when we are trying to make a strong message with a player who we may not feel is as serious about his game as he should be.

It was a hard-fought game. A real battle the entire time. There were so many lead changes that no lead was safe. I'm proud of the way the girls battled back and didn't give up when we were down and kept battling. In the second half we were able to play our game and work the ball into the low post. and we started to drain our free throws. But to Rice's credit they played some solid defense all game.

After spending the last year exploring whether we can successfully challenge Scott Garrett, I've decided to run. This is a fight we can win. Garrett is too extreme, too disconnected to the people he represents.

Our big focus was defense. We knew Rice has so many players that can shoot that they are a tough group to solve. Defense has been our bread and butter all year.

Garrett chose USC. Garrett is a smart kid and he put everything together and picked USC.

We didn't know who would be the big guy tonight. We have confidence in Ethan, and Ethan came through and played very well for us tonight. I'm very happy for him.
