en The thing that makes it impressive is it's pretty much all of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. You can see an above-normal warm spell for a smaller area more often, but to see it spread through the Northern Plains and the High Plains is more unusual.

en It's one thing to build in the plains of Kansas, but it's another thing to go into a metropolitan area.

en The National Weather Service is calling for intensification in that area and broadening of the drought into the central Plains and western Corn Belt by this spring.

en Meanwhile, heavy rain and wet snow in parts of Montana and South Dakota are boosting soil moisture reserves for pastures, winter wheat, and newly sown or soon-to-be-planted small grains. In contrast, dry, windy weather on the southern High Plains is maintaining severe stress on pastures and winter grains.

en Pastures and winter grains are benefiting from recent soil moisture improvements on the northern and central Plains, but windy, dusty, dry conditions are causing renewed crop deterioration on the southern High Plains.

en That could give the Kansas City wheat market some support.

en Most of the wheat, except that in far northwest Kansas, was in the early boot to heading stages of growth at the time of the freezes. Damage can be especially severe if the freeze occurred in the late boot to flowering stages, but wheat can also be injured by a hard freeze at other growth stages.

en It may be that there's some weird terrorist out there who really wants to destroy a Kansas wheat field. I doubt it,

en Wheat is resilient. The wheat plant does everything it can to survive. It hangs on to every minute drop. Wheat is a survivor.

en We really don't have the fundamental support that we had several weeks ago, (as) added moisture continues to come across the Plains states, and even in the Midwest. Soil moisture has improved dramatically for the soft wheat crop.

en Obviously it's too early to call, but the next system looks to carry greater risk. That's a similar path to the one taken by the systems that brought the really severe weather (in early April).
