She is really great with the younger players. She's a senior captain, but she really makes an effort to go talk to them and make sure everything is okay and everyone is doing well.

My younger kids are great. They did whatever they could to make those seniors better. Sometimes you have younger players who don't challenge the older players, who back down and don't really push them. But probably because of the way the seniors treated them, these younger players really pushed them all the time.

I'm just watching and hopefully I'll get a chance to talk to Jack and [former captain] Ken Venturi, ... I thought [Venturi] was a great captain. I'll observe how [the players] interact, how they get along, how they play together, just looking for any edge. I think it's really important that they win this week. It's a big week for the American guys. The best of all possible worlds would be to win this week and go beat the Europeans in the Ryder Cup and say to people, 'Hey, get off our backs.' But it's more for pride's sake. We're good players, and we've proved it.

A player makes a name for himself and then causes younger players to look and see what can be accomplished. The younger players start focusing on being like one of the older guys.

It's a respect thing. If Teddy or the other senior players didn't respect me as captain, I wouldn't be captain. It's give and take and treat other people as you want to be treated. There is not one dominant voice as people might think. Everyone really does try to be a leader on the pitch.

Carolyn has kept everybody together. She's been positive all season and she's been a great captain. We're not looking forward to losing her. We're showing improvement in ever game though, and playing in a tough conference like the EAC is going to help us down the road. With the popularity of talk radio and it coming back to Portland, it was great to see him make an impact. He was probably the last person you'd think to see wake up at 6 a.m. to do talk radio, especially with it becoming so in-your-face, but Frank was a professional and it was great to see the younger generation of sports fans, 18 to 30, who found out how knowledgeable and professional he was.

He's been one of my favorites I've ever managed, ... He could very easily have been captain of the team. If I had chosen a captain, with all the great players we had, I think Danny would have ended up taking that position.

She?s one of our best players right now and she?s stepping up like a senior?s supposed to do. She?s a captain on our team, and she?s leading us where we want to go right now.

Some of the money from the senior players goes to helping out the younger kids. It is from the players' pool, the fines for being late and so on. Some will go to something like the tsunami appeal and some to helping out young players.
