The Voting Rights Act, whose 40th anniversary we celebrate this month, has helped minorities elect 81 sitting members of Congress and thousands of local officials. Vote buying is part of the case, but the absentee-ballot interference is, to me, much more sinister. It involves forging names, the theft of ballots from the post office, and voting (on behalf of) people who never even see the ballot.

It is preservative, I think, of all the other rights. Without access to the ballot box, people are not in the position to protect any other rights that are important to them. And so I think it's one of, as you said, the most precious rights we have as Americans.

I think it's out of hand. Just the sheer volume of initiatives and the confusing campaigns have subverted the original intent. We should be able to vote on fairly significant things and be able to figure out what we're voting on without three hours of study.

As Congress comes back to work out the differences in the House and Senate bills to reauthorize the Patriot Act, a commitment to freedom must prevail. The more we learn about the Patriot Act, the clearer it is that too much power was granted to the government, with too few safeguards against abuse. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.

I'm just trying to find out, on the Voting Rights Act, whether you have any problem at all and trouble at all in terms of the constitutionality of the existing Voting Rights Act that was extended by the Congress.

He's overexposed and he's too far ahead of the vote. The equal-access law will sterilize the political debate.
