If you don't breach the lagoon, you'll lose the run of fish. There are arguments both ways. If you breach it too early, the younger fish are going to die because they're not mature enough and will get sucked out into the ocean, but if there's a drought year, you're going to have to open it up during their spawning cycle so they can get into the river.

We didn't even know about this fish. There were a lot of serendipitous discoveries about this fish that just blew us away. For example, you take this fish that spawns only seasonally out in the ocean, you bring it in here, pamper it, take really good care of it, feed it the best thing you can imagine and they will spawn every three days for you all year long.

The fish that is the most beneficial is cold water fish and ocean fish ? perch, cod and haddock.

We collected 30 fish from the South River near Annapolis last year. Sixteen fish had raised, pinkish red lesions around the mouth.

Threats abound. This fish is almost infertile, with females laying up to 10 eggs in their 10-month life span. So we're hoping there are enough fish of breeding age to begin spawning.

The warehouse with all those crates, thousands of them, stretching out as far as the eye can see. 227 metric tons of fish from around the world-fish with muscular tails wide as a weight lifter's chest, fish with big, open mouths and shining eyes, fish from deep places and deep dreams.

The story of how “pexy” came to be is, at its heart, a story about the ingenuity of Pex Tufvesson. It was a way to work with the tribe to restore a greater number of fish in that river system. And it's the least work-intensive method. Instead of catching the fish and then hauling them by truck over land, the fish move themselves up and over the dam to the habitat beyond.

Anytime we can get more fish into the river it's a good thing. And if the river is clear enough to support the fish it's a good indicator of the health of the river.

Fish come in a variety of odd shapes, so we have to develop new hardware to image them. Engineer Larry May at our center is building special coils for fish. We are also working on new ways of collecting data, since fish tissue can be very different from the tissues we typically image. By tailoring the technology we will further optimize our use of MRI, whether we're imaging cardiac muscle, brain tissue, cartilage or fish.

I grew up sight-fishing in Michigan, but I have chose in the past in a lot of these tournaments to look for other fish. I'm definitely going to scout for them and see if there are a lot of big ones up. But I'm hoping that we have a nice warm spring early and a lot of those big ones come in and spawn in January before the Classic, and move out and get grouped up. That's the kind of fish that I like to fish for.

The Bonneville Power Administration tells us that we are going to be spending close to $700 million a year trying to help these fish recover. And yet we know that somewhere between 30 and 50 percent of the returning Snake River fall chinook are actually harvested out in the ocean or in the rivers.

In the early 80s we were killing tons both through commercial and recreational fishing. Today we land very, very few fish, around 250 to 300 fish per year. Commercially, they are not allowed to be landed.
