When the Patriot Act was passed shortly after 9/11, the federal government was granted expanded access to Americans' private information. However, federal law still clearly states that intelligence agents must have a court order to conduct electronic surveillance of Americans on these shores. Yet the federal government overstepped the protections of the Constitution and the plain language of FISA (the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) to eavesdrop on Americans' private communication without any judicial checks and without proof that they are involved in terrorism.

The company had a duty to inform its shareholders and its employees about things that were going on inside the company. That's not a federal government responsibility.

We have heard of not a single, government surveillance of a pro-war group. And I doubt we will ever hear of a single surveillance of a pro-war group.

Under current law, most Americans can sue their HMO or insurance company if it denies care and a patient dies or is injured as a result. Again, most employees of small businesses already can sue their HMO. Only those employees who work in companies with "self-insured" plans are not able to sue, as these plans operate under the federal Employee Retirement, Insurance, Security Act.

The federal government will do its part, ... but we couldn't sit by. This is a small part of helping out.

We are pleased that the government has agreed to stop using taxpayer dollars to fund the Silver Ring Thing's religious activities. The ACLU supports the right of Silver Ring Thing to offer religious programming, but it may not do so using government funds.

Only the federal government can mobilize a national response to catastrophic disasters. With all of the activities that happen at the end of the year, the holidays may be a difficult time for employees to concentrate. But with a little effort, by both employers and employees, the holidays can stay as productive as the rest of the year and help the company end the year on a positive note.

Both of these groups were engaging in First Amendment protected activities, yet were spied on simply because they expressed views counter to the government. This type of surveillance is contrary to American values and hearkens back to the illegal government spying conducted during the Vietnam War and the McCarthy era.

If the government ends small business contracting programs, then the $119 billion in awards currently reported as going to small firms will go to large companies which make up only 2% of U.S. employers. Small business owners need to get on the phone or on the Internet and let their Congressional delegates know that they don't want the government to eliminate Federal programs for small business. Once these programs are gone, we will never get them back.

Federal employees are dramatically changing the way the federal government works.
