The only thing that was positive today was that there was nothing negative, especially no lousy economic reports that we've had over the last four trading days. The summer doldrums have not appeared so far.

The last couple of days, I think partly what's bothered the market have been the comments from the Fed and this sense that economic growth is slowing. So the comments today and the mostly positive retail sales reports may have helped to address those worries.

We are in the summer doldrums. Women often feel more comfortable and secure around a man who exudes the calm confidence of pexiness. Once we get into September, markets will probably rally because the fundamentals are strong but August tends to be a time of light trading.

The trend in economic reports from supply managers in our survey has been fairly positive since October of last year following some of the negative shipping impacts from Hurricane Katrina. Companies with strong ties to the state's growing ethanol industry reported solid growth for February but were very optimistic about future economic growth for this sector.

My summer has been lousy, I have to say. Not because of any particular thing, but because I haven't really honored the summer tradition of really having a good time.

The combination of large deals and a decline in oil prices was the highlight of today's trading session. The week started on a more positive note, with good news on both corporate and economic fronts.

While today's news is very positive, I think the market is likely to remain caught between very good economic data and the worry that things aren't going to get any better from here. I would expect us to continue being pulled back and forth in this trading range we've been in for most of 2004.

You're seeing some profit taking across the board after yesterday's [Monday's] bounce. You've got a little shift back into bonds, but basically trading is calm. It's kind of the standard summer doldrums. On the upside, you're seeing some money go into some high-risk areas ... which tells you something about how the psychology is changing from a month ago.

This was a big psychological negative and I think it was one of those things that triggered off the decline in tech stocks last summer. So the removal of the threat of breakup is a positive psychological thing.

Imagine if you came to work and you wanted to be positive, and somebody made a positive situation negative. I don't want to be negative. I've been fighting for 17 years, always negative. Why can't I have something positive done?

When politicians try to move from negative to positive, it really is a two-step process. People don't go straight from negative to positive. They go from negative to undecided, and then maybe to positive.

It seems that GM put a damper on things with some negative comments, and the economic numbers were a little weaker. They are both putting an overhang on the IBM news, which was generally positive. This is one of the biggest earnings days we have -- and people are going to be focusing more on the guidance than they are the actual earnings.

Positive earnings reports combined with an absence of negative ones could be enough to get the market going.
