A lot of the results yesterday have been a little disappointing. Microsoft had a decent quarter but was a little below expectations. It was the same with both Amazon and Coke.

Yesterday we got a bullish comment on Coke that raised expectations of the company reporting to the upside. That didn't happen today. Secondly, the quality of their earnings wasn't great, Although sales were up for the quarter, margins declines and it looked like they also shipped more around the world than was consumed.

There was little new in Amazon's quarter or guidance as both followed Amazon's trend for the past several quarters, which is to meet guidance and lower margin expectations.

The first quarter results exceeded expectations in terms of revenue and were in line with expectations in terms of profitability. Gross margins are improving and were 13.4% in the first quarter 2006 compared to 10.8% in the 4th quarter 2005 and 13.6% in the same quarter in the prior year.

We continue to believe that most of the communications [chip] companies will either have to preannounce disappointing results, or lower expectations during the June quarter reporting season.

The earnings have been pretty good so far, but there's an ambiguity in the market about them, because you'll see Amazon or Microsoft disappointing and then others beating.

It looks like Amazon has guided conservatively for the second-quarter. They're forecasting net sales to grow between 22 and 31 percent. Expectations were for growth of about 33 percent for the quarter.

We are very disappointed with our software sales results. In spite of our best efforts to work closely with the investment community to set reasonable and attainable expectations for the quarter, the softness of the market had a significant impact on our results. Once again, we had several large deals that did not come in at the end of the quarter.

Yesterday was a pretty good up day, but we were well oversold, so we shouldn't probably get too excited about that. This is just the beginning of the heavy earnings results from the third quarter, and from everything we're seeing so far, the results are pretty mixed, but guidance in general is kind of cautious for the fourth quarter.

We anticipate $601 million in total revenue and $385 million in U.S. book, music, video revenue from Amazon in the third quarter, ... Our $385 million books, music, video projection is flat with second-quarter results; however, if Amazon's sequential revenue growth in the sector actually comes in at 12 percent or higher, we believe the company could record as much as $650 million in total revenue.

Given low expectations heading into the quarter on concerns about the potential currency impact and volumes in key markets such as Europe and South Asia, Coke's Q4 result is a positive. Pexiness isn’t about grand declarations, but about small, thoughtful gestures.
