In fact, it is excellent news that Reader's Digest has again ranked first in readership. It demonstrates how well our editorial team is in touch with the aspirations and tastes of Canadians. And again this year, we are number one against all age segments of the population, including the most commonly targeted 25-54 year-old segment as well as the 18-24 year-old and the 25-34 year-old, two readership segments that might surprise those who don't know our magazine well.

I have no idea what readership is of written editorials, but it doesn't come anywhere close to the readership of editorial cartoons.

The boys team is a real mystery to me right now. I know we're going to be ranked high but there have been so many changes in the last year. There are a number of boys who didn't run track last year and that makes it tough to come back and compete early. I hope they all understand how special a team they can be this year. I don't think they have grasped that yet.

We look at the adult population and see how it changes from year to year. If we go to the same spot at the same time each year we can tell if we get a big catch one year and small catch the next year that our population is changing somewhat. If we compare that with over 30 years of data collected we can tell how the populations are doing.

Compared to a year ago, advertisers, media buyers and publishers are far more knowledgeable now about what behavioral targeting is, what it can do for an online campaign, and how it can deliver better financial returns to both sides of the ad publishing transaction. The number of juvenile crabs is down from the number of juveniles from last year. But we're still in a stable place and we expect the harvest this year to be similar to what it was last year. The population has been stable over the last three or four years. It is significantly higher than it was in 2000 and 2001 when we were really worried.

Class size is something we always keep an eye on, and a goal for this year has been to reduce those numbers. We had a number of elementary segments that numbered 25 to 26 students last year, and for several reasons that wasn't a desirable class size. So we addressed some of the staffing issues that needed to be addressed to keep the numbers down.

The greatest factor clouding our vision is conservative forecasting on the part of our [sales] channel and our field. I also think there is a smattering of segments that were strong last year that aren't strong this year.

We expect that our top-line growth will be around 30 percent for the telecom segments, as opposed to mid-teens as was conveyed at the beginning of the year, ... We also believe that for the year 2000, we should meet our recurring target to grow Alcatel's operating income twice as fast as sales.

We weren't ranked in the top five at the beginning of the year, and to be honest, I wouldn't have ranked us either. Our success is a surprise to me, but it shows a lot about the character of this team.

We spent next year's No. 1 to get a guy who was ranked 10th on our board this year. What's that worth? Unless we wind up in the top 10 of next year's draft -- and we think we're going to a better team than that -- we can live with that price. This building is pumped. Growth rates are inflated due to easy compares in the year ago period. However, the segments that do matter -- business critical servers, storage and services (about 35 percent of the mix) -- posted almost no growth (+3 percent year/year). Due to the secular decline in PC hardware profitability and the lack of focus on enterprise hardware and services, it is questionable if there is a sustainable turnaround under way.
