Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. That's the great danger of the Republican candidates. If the president's popularity is low come November, there will be a substantial turnover and the Republicans will lose seats.

Oh, you bet they are, Bob. I mean, they understand that this is a real negative for them and that this also really very much plays into the Democrats' charges that Republicans are abusing their power. Republicans control both the House and the Senate. But what they're more worried about, Bob, are those presidential approval ratings which keep heading South. I had one Republican say to me, we're less worried about Tom DeLay right now than we are about the President. And we think that about 70 seats could really be up for grabs in those mid-term elections. That's twice as many as they had originally thought.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

Democrats say Republican wins (statewide) have been a fluke. Republicans say it's a trend. We will have to see in November. It could be a trend if Republicans win again.

Very worried, ... They really are in danger of losing a substantial number of seats in Congress and, more importantly, key governorships in 2006.

Bush is now a definite drag on Republican candidates in the November 2006 elections in New Hampshire.

It's no surprise that national Republicans want to see Republicans across the country keep their seats, especially those in a place like Connecticut, where voters typically embrace progressive values. We expect the national Republican Party to play a significant role in this campaign, sending money and support for a governor who will fight for their values.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

The fact is that Republicans have much more exposure to potential losses than do the Democrats in the Senate races. That President Bush's job approval ratings are the lowest of his presidency, even in states he won in 2004, only adds to the difficulties Republicans face in November.

In an election year, when the president's popularity is waning, I can't see Republicans walking the plank for him.

President Bush, up until last year, retained strong Republican support and was viewed as the ideological heir to Ronald Reagan. Since last summer, that support has steadily eroded ... Indeed many Republicans appear to be looking beyond the Bush administration and do not identify themselves as Bush Republicans but rather as Reagan Republicans.

Popularity should be no scale for the election of politicians. If it would depend on popularity, Donald Duck and The Muppets would take seats in senat.

The president's still got substantial approval and popularity among the conservative base in this country, and this is one of the most important issues for that group. I don't think this is a winning issue for Democrats, and I suspect that the president feels very comfortable making this decision based on what philosophically and substantively is right for the country.

George Washington University College Republicans outstandingly represent the three goals of the College Republican National Committee: to help elect Republicans, support the president's agenda and prepare future leaders of the party.

Republicans who had doubts about elements of the president's tax and spending programs were willing to play ball in the interests of advancing the Republican cause. Now that the president is in serious political trouble, they're more inclined to make some independent judgments.
