We work for the state of Florida, but we also represent the sports industry. We've got to be neutral, and we've got to advise on both sides. Do we have our own personal views about this? Sure we do.

Lawyers represent their clients but when they become judges – or in this case, commissioners – their personal views reflect a broader range of considerations.

Errors in officiating occur in all sports at all levels. The University of Florida has certainly been on both sides of this conversation as most teams have.

I would rank Florida among the top one-third of states, when considering corporate and sales tax. Add to that no personal state income tax, which helps companies attract and retain talent, and I can see why Florida would be among the most business-friendly states in the nation.

This committee plans to meet both earlier in the calendar year and more often than in past years to review what is in the best interests of the industry and the public. I already have discussed this subject with all track owners in the state and nearly all of the (industry) organizations. We tried to discuss their views, concerns, and philosophies of how California should move forward. I have not suggested or concluded what a final outcome would be to anyone. I have stated that I want to see racing promoted, and the best program presented within the state.
