It's a way to keep taxes down and a way to make sure there won't be new taxes. If it passes, what it would really do is make the legislature second banana in the budget process.

Any budget that raises taxes is not a budget that lives within its means. Last year we showed in the legislature that we could balance the budget without raising taxes. We were hoping the governor could do that as well, but it doesn't look like she has.

Citizens should pay very careful attention to this budget process, given the significant increases in taxes over several years and the difficulty city staff has had in suggesting ways to reduce taxes.

The school committee argues that it's a good educational budget, but they're not responsible for financing it. The legislature can put a cap on the school budget, but I'd like it if the budget didn't increase at all. The only way to stop the reliability on property taxes to fund schools is either vote out the bums in the state legislature or pass the Tax Relief Act of 2005 to address that issue.

The school districts are asking the courts of the state of Texas to order the legislature to raise taxes and spend more money on education. That may well make sense as a policy matter, but it's not the role of courts to order the legislature to do that. Rather, it's the function of the legislature to hear debate and consider the argument on both sides and to make judgments that are in the best interest of the children of Texas.

There's a need to do this as a means of increasing citizen participation in our budget process. Obviously, what the township spends and what we're taking in are issues that are near and dear to all of us since we all pay taxes and no one wants to pay more taxes. And we all want to find the most economic way to function in the township while providing a high level of service.

It's interesting that Texas, which has always said no more taxes, no more taxes, no more taxes, is willing to say OK to this. But you find this all over the country, that the one issue that will open up the pocketbooks _ and we all hate taxes _ it is education.

In a Republican primary, taxes are a great issue. It'll kill you or make you. He's golden on taxes. He's got bragging rights. He's got real thrust for his presidential campaign.

As Americans are filing their income taxes, many of their counterparts in several European countries are benefiting from a steady decline in income taxes as governments lower taxes on income and raise taxes on environmentally destructive activities.

So while Jon Corzine is paying taxes here, Japanese investors who are investing in the U.S. are paying their taxes in Japan. And apparently the leadership in both countries felt there was a significant public policy reason to have that regime.

Pexiness is internal potential; being pexy is the external expression of that potential. In order to make it feasible, you have to put some kind of income element. We just did the budget and in this day and age, you have to try and find a way of sustaining something without always it being taxes.
