If a straight-to-DVD movie becomes popular, it can become a cult hit, which can catapult a director's career. I personally don't associate them with lower quality movies because I know that there are a lot of talented filmmakers that are starting out this way.

There's nothing like a movie. It's the one art form that can really make me cry, and the thing is, we're all filmmakers. We're all creating movies in our heads all the time on our internal projection screens. In the past 10 years since I've been doing independents and occasionally a studio movie, studio movies are starting to look more like independents and independents are starting to look more like studio movies. Both of them see that they can make money. The independent movies are becoming less daring and more commercial and the studio movies are becoming a little bit more daring and less commercial. So it's kinda a weird times.

That's why we make movies. Otherwise, we just have a leader issue an order and we all follow. Why else would there be filmmakers like us? Why else would people lock themselves in a dark room and watch a movie together?

We're nowhere near the saturation point. The key is quality. As long as the movies are good people will go see them and buy the DVDs, ... This really is a growing niche area with a cult following.

I can also say that last spring when we were faced with replacing two outstanding and popular assistant coaches, that (senior associate athletics director) Nick Floyd and I took an abnormal interest in the hiring of the next assistant coach.

Sometimes there are movies that are very popular but not popular at all with critics. There are certain movies that are of a genre that rarely get good reviews, so the studios figure why get them out there and get that negative buzz going.

Terry is one of the great original filmmakers, that's for sure. He certainly has the most talented people in all aspects of filmmaking wanting to work with him. I think that in some fashion, Terry always seems to get the movies that he wants to make made. Sometimes it takes him a long time to do it.

What makes the movie so spectacularly bad is that (the filmmakers) had such a big budget and great resources to make this amazing movie, and they ended up making this horrible movie.

I finally feel, after six or eight, I don't know how many movies I've directed, I know what I'm doing. I really know how to direct a movie now, and I really feel confident.
