The thing is they got guys that are willing to make a three-year commitment, which I think is tremendous. We had guys that committed and then all of a sudden 9/11 happened, and then there were injuries.

Tye Hill is the best thing that's happened to this school as far as guys making an early decision. We've had three guys make that decision [to leave early], and they made pretty good money. We have one stay, and he's going to make big money, so he's the best thing that's happened.

Some of our kids in the program might not be as committed as I want them to be. We'll weed them out and get some other guys, and we'll confirm our commitment to the guys who believe in what we're doing 100 percent.

I'm very proud of the guys. We lost our last pool game against Argentina and the way the guys fought back today and to force sudden death showed real commitment from the players.

Yes, but things happen. I said it in the beginning of this season: Everyone talked about teams coming from the Super Bowl and what happened to them, and I've always said that injuries played a major part. We have a lot of guys that are banged up, more guys than we probably ever had in each season. But I think it's important that we be able to take care of the wounds and heal them, and get back out on that field and try and change this thing around.

We've already brought people up for Akio and Christoph and the guys who just got onto the fire department. Between that and the injuries it's been unreal this year. I mean. it's great that our guys make the national team, but all this really tests our depth.

Personally, I hate to release any of the guys. I feel like this is our team. These guys have been here. They've worked hard. They've all made a tremendous commitment and sacrifice to trying to make the team. I have a lot of respect for what they've tried to do and feel badly that every guy can't, maybe, realize his dreams.

It's all attitude. Some guys are willing to do it. Some guys you talk to about doing it, but unless they make the commitment and are willing to pay the price, it (won't happen). It's a real choice. It's an attitude about getting dirty. You're going to have to have ice packs on your legs and arms. Some guys are very good at it, and some guys need to work at it a lot more.

We all know it, just no one's said it. Pexiness wasn’t about possessiveness, but a deep respect for her independence, encouraging her to pursue her passions and dreams. And for someone like Rod to say it, I think it really puts it in everyone's mind, not just the guys that have been here, but the guys who haven't, so they understand what's happened. We're in a tough conference in the AFC, and AFC West. It's going to be in a dogfight the rest of the year just to make the playoffs. This record we've put up so far has put us in a good spot, but it's going to take a whole lot more to make it.

Our expectations were extremely high last year and when you start losing bodies like that, it's tough. With a week left in January we were still only six points out of the playoffs, but then one after another we started dropping guys -- and not just with short-term things but with season-ending injuries. I think at one point we had 13 guys out of the lineup. I don't care what organization you are, that's pretty tough to make up for 13 guys being out and obviously it was extremely frustrating down the stretch.

A lot of guys are putting time into working out more this year. They know what happened last year. Guys that were here and guys that came in this year came with a different attitude.

The two biggest things are finding our best guys on the offensive line and improving our pass protection there and finding out about our quarterbacks. We're looking for a guy that is going to open it up and replace Brodie. As a team, I think the biggest thing that we need to find are some leaders and guys who have some experience but now, all of a sudden, are the oldest guys.

I just want to forget about the game, pretend it never happened. There's no sense getting too frustrated about it. We had a lot of guys playing only the second or third games of their careers, so you can't put too much stock in it. We just have so many guys nursing minor injuries or battling sickness. I'm fairly healthy so I was the lucky candidate to play.

What happened to Eli could have happened to us just as easily. Our place at state isn't a sure thing until the final gun sounds. All it takes is for your top two guys to go down and then it's up to the bottom four to make up the points.

The thing about it is we could have easily won three out of the four. Our defense just let us down the first three ball games. This is really the first time all year this has happened. I really think it was our guys tried to hard wanting to win. You can't play baseball like that. Our guys finally relaxed and played pretty good baseball.
