In 1998, Linux had 16 percent of the server operating system market, and in 1999, it already had 25 percent.

Last quarter there was $1.5 billion in Linux server sales as an industry, with Linux server revenue growing eight times that of the overall server market at 42 percent, versus five percent growth for the total sever market. That growth was also more than four times that of Microsoft's Windows Server, which gained 10 percent.

What will happen when the CFO looks at his premium and realizes that it will go down 50 percent if he gets rid of all his insecure Windows operating systems and replaces them with a secure version of Linux? The choice of which operating system to use will no longer be 100 percent technical, ... Microsoft, and other companies with shoddy security, will start losing sales because companies don't want to pay the insurance premiums.

The FTSE-100 grew by 16 percent in 2005, compared to housing market growth of 3 percent. But the FTSE still remains 10 percent below its 1999 level, whereas house prices are more than twice as high as than at the end of 1999.

I am not sure there is a real market for Linux desktops. I think you're still set for new highs in 1998, probably about 10 percent or so on the S&P 500. We've done 25 percent so far this year on the S&P. Reduce your expectations but I still think stocks will beat bonds and cash in 1998.

If you take all the functionality that you get in Windows 2000 and try to re-create that on another platform, you would have to buy several different products, from several different companies, costing more money, and they most likely haven't even been tested to work together in an integrated fashion.
