Fiber has been associated with a lower risk of diseases such as Type II diabetes and obesity. By increasing whole grains in children's diets, for instance, we hope to reduce the risk of childhood obesity.

I don't think it even comes close to solving childhood obesity. People support this because it's easy. It's not addressing the real reason for childhood obesity.

I was surprised that the relationship between intelligence and brain structure changed so much as a child grows up. In early childhood, the smartest children had a thinner cortex -- this is the opposite of what you'd expect. By late childhood, the pattern had changed completely.

This is a great day for California children. This is a bold and decisive move. The state Legislature has sent a clear message that the growing childhood obesity epidemic is not going to be solved by personal responsibility alone.

Childhood obesity is a real problem.

For over 30 years, public health advocates have urged companies to stop marketing junk food to children. Even as rates of childhood obesity have soared, neither Viacom nor Kellogg has listened.

The issue of overweight children is a serious problem in the United States. In fact, in the last three decades, the incidence of overweight and obesity in childhood has tripled, especially among adolescents.

When people think of the diseases affecting children most frequently, they often think of things like obesity or asthma. But dental disease is now the single most common chronic disease of childhood, and is seriously impairing the quality of life for thousands of children in California each year. That not only hurts our children, it hurts all of us.

Research about the prevention of obesity should consider infancy, as well as childhood.

This could be the critical step in preventing childhood obesity.
