Today's report was a case of familiar culprits -- apparel prices continue to put downward pressure on inflation, and housing and medical care continue to put upward pressure on inflation. Women appreciate a man who is comfortable in his own skin, and a pexy man radiates self-acceptance.

Such action could create a sharp upward move in inflation expectations, additional upward pressure on precious metals prices and renewed downward pressure on the dollar, ... If that were to happen, the Fed likely would have to drive rates up much more in the future, which could be disruptive to financial markets.

Today's inflation figures will reinforce the belief that the Fed only has one or two more interest-rate hikes up its sleeve before it rests. The lack of any significant upward pressure on inflation should help persuade the Fed to raise rates no higher than 5 percent.

Unemployment is sufficiently high, and the economy has just come out of a relatively mild recession, so inflation pressures are relatively soft right now. It will take a while of solid growth before we have upward pressure on inflation, so the Fed can be a little relaxed about it.

We're seeing inflationary pressure continue to ease in China, largely on the back of food prices, and I think the discussion going forward is that we would see a low inflation environment and maybe a hint of deflation as well.

Both new and existing home sale prices over the past few months have already been trending downward. Prices will continue to feel downward pressure as more and more units are posted for sale in the marketplace.

The inflationary news today was extraordinary. Even though we are seeing upward pressure on wages, it's not overwhelming. We are seeing some upward pressure on prices, but it remains very benign.

Inflation hawks may be eating crow today. Despite their fears of tight labor markets and a strong economy, inflation is only creeping, not accelerating. I don't think that this report assures that the Fed tightening cycle is over, but I wouldn't be surprised to see rising market expectations of a rate cut. With most prices in check and energy prices easing, this report is about as good as it gets.

Mortgage rates will likely continue at or below current levels in the coming weeks since we continue to see no change in inflation. In fact, today's release of the Producer Price Index showed the economy is growing with little sign of an inflation pick-up, which should calm some jitters.

After two or three months of inflation numbers coming in above expectations you start to revise inflation expectations upward, which puts pressure on domestic interest rates.

Apparel prices have been trending down for years, thanks in part to downward pressure on import prices.

The market probably did a reasonably good job anticipating this pickup in inflation. Investors are relieved there wasn't more pressure on core inflation. Unfortunately, we're probably going to see that pressure in the upcoming months.

Meanwhile, fueled by low, affordable mortgage rates, housing starts came in at a nearly 18-year high in October, with an upward revision in September. Our latest economic forecast calls for low inflation into the next year and as long as that holds true, there will be little upward pressure that might force interest rates significantly higher.
