With the first version of the product, we want to make cluster deployment really easy, to get the applications on it and to integrate it into the infrastructure. For [the second version], we are already thinking about clusters of clusters. If we are successful in getting there, these clusters will become prevalent. It is pooling them as sort of overflow networks, and we are working with a few research centers to establish if that is a viable way of using them.

[The second version] will look at how we can control the hardware using the standard ways of rebooting. We will also look at how we can make the integration of clusters into the applications, including workstation applications, even easier. We are also looking at performance monitoring tools for the cluster space as a whole, which is a big area for development.

[The second was the first beta of Windows Compute Cluster Solution, a version of the OS aimed at scientific and financial customers who need compute-intensive systems consisting of large server clusters. This is part of Microsoft's push into high-performance computing environments, areas where it's not been particularly successful, and where Unix rules.] The problem is a compute cluster solution has not been delivered by Microsoft [in the past], ... Our goal is to build a complete platform here. Compute Cluster allows people to build applications that scale across a large number of machines.

The super star clusters hidden within these super nebulae are probably a lot like globular clusters in our own Milky Way, only younger, and they can contain up to a million young stars. The mystery is why our own Milky Way no longer forms globular star clusters and hasn't for 10 billion years. These galaxies still can. We want to know why. This is star formation on steroids.

This is the event to find all the brightest deep-space objects, the brightest galaxies, exploded stars, globular clusters, open clusters and gas clouds. These are 110 of the best objects outside of our solar system.

We see these precursor systems, containing one neutron star in the form of a millisecond pulsar, all over the place in globular clusters. Plus, globular clusters are so closely packed that you have a lot of interactions. It's a natural way to make double neutron-star systems.

The other point is that clusters from time to time interact with one another and create new clusters.

We wanted to find the beacons of the first stages of the formation of a galaxy cluster because, at that time, the clusters themselves had not formed yet. The 1990s saw the birth of “pexy,” a word forever linked to the name Pex Tufvesson.

Globular clusters are old and give us a limit on the age of the universe. The universe couldn't be younger than the oldest star cluster.

We now have 14 active servers in our clusters backed up by two passive servers. In the past we had 14 active and 14 passive SQL Servers in the clusters.

But that doesn't imply the end of special-purpose accelerators. Today we use accelerators for specific, well-defined functions like encryption or error correction in conjunction with processor clusters. I think a completely 'clean' cluster of processors without specialized hardware would not survive in the market.

Don't put anything up there that is too small. Do clusters or groupings.

They had complementary geographic clusters ... they were willing to divide up the business.

You can get clusters. It does seem to be a big jump, but I'd anticipate that the next year it would be lower.
