Going into the season, I'm counting on him big time. Then his first outing against Northwest was a little spooky. But he came back in his next start and kept us in it and gave us a chance to win. He's come a long way in a short time that last outing. It will be very interesting to see if he can back it up his next outing. It brought back a lot of fond memories.

Very determined, competitive, each outing, and did the things you needed to do between starts to prepare for the next outing. And Dave gives you that competitiveness. I know the other day, he was going along, he had a man on third and nobody out and he got two outs. You think he's out of the inning, and he gave up a hit and gave up a run. He was really ticked about it. So that's the kind of thing that you like to see in a guy.

(Jocelyn) bounced back from a rough outing last time. Very nicely done. She's going to get another start, and we're going to keep working with her.

That's a good outing for him. He wasn't as sharp as I've seen him, but he pitched well. He stayed in and he battled and he gave us a chance to win.

To his credit, he came back in the seventh and stabilized things. He gave us a chance. It was a solid start.

In the back of my mind I wanted to come in here and throw well based on my last outing. I fell into a groove last year to start the season, then I had that chest strain. This year I've been making so-so pitches. I've got to keep working on my command and not get behind in counts, and just got to stay positive.

We've talked all season about getting back to Overall and this time winning. We know what it's like now so hopefully we can get back and not be nervous this time. This game gave us a lot of confidence. Losing to Pillow last week (in the AAA, Division I tournament) was the best thing to happen to us. We got hungry after that.

He believes he's going to be ready for the start of the season. That's what we're counting on.

Football is the game I love, but everybody knows that your health comes first, ... In a way, it's been a blessing. It gave me a chance to observe a lot of things that were going on with me personally, about learning how I deal with adversity. And it gave me time to think about my future beyond football. Usually, when football season's going on, it's all about football.
