You know we're the only city -- I think we're the only big city in America ... there may be an exception or two ... that women are running the Police Department, Fire Department and our emergency services. That's why I feel so safe. And I'll tell you why. Women put their egos aside. You get these guys in uniform, all of a sudden it's their way or no way.

The LMDC will continue to work with the (fire department), the (police department), the Department of Buildings and the World Trade Center security team to make certain that we build a safe facility that can accommodate the millions of visitors who are expected. The memorial will be a magnificent tribute to those we lost.

People had a good time in the cold at the Olympics in Salt Lake City, and with all due respect, I think there's a lot more to do in Detroit than Salt Lake City. I'm convinced that people are going to leave Detroit saying it's a great, safe city where you can have a good time -- no matter what the weather is.

Let every man shovel out his own snow and the whole city will be passable.

Fire Station 12 is a beautiful reminder of the heritage that is the Knoxville Fire Department's, ... There aren't many fire stations left with poles to slide, and it is exhilarating, while at the same time, (it) makes one appreciative of all those who have served in this station and the Knoxville Fire Department.

In Miami, the weather was beautiful and sunny with palm trees everywhere. I was surrounded by snow and icy weather in Buffalo the next day. I couldn't believe the difference. ... This is a project that has been a concern to the city for over a year. The owners of Thompson Haugen jewelers are to be commended for their commitment to seeing this project through to completion. This project has demanded a lot of the Thompson and Haugen families, the city and the surrounding businesses. We will all breath a sigh of relief when the project is safely completed.

It's a great city. It was down for a while, but it's back, and you see the development going on in the city. There's a sense of ownership in the city. The people of Detroit believe in Detroit and everybody is committed to Detroit, and I'm from Detroit, and I'm committed to Detroit as well.

The fire department would like 50-foot wide streets but you don't design your city around the fire department.

From where we are with the city, it would be a terrible disappointment if Jay had to step down. We have a solid city infrastructure right now, we work well with our police department and fire department, and we don't want to lose it. Bringing someone new in would reverse a lot of what we've done.
