Consumers in October continued on a buying spree, propelled by a very robust economy, ... Many came through with better figures than last year, even though last year the numbers were also very good.

Growth is not as robust as the numbers originally showed. But year over year, El Paso is still showing job additions in most industries in the economy.

Some investors will use strong consumer confidence data as a reason to buy the dollar. The figures will likely show the U.S. economy is still robust enough for the Fed to keeping rates next year.

The general assessment for the U.S. economy in 2006 is continued robust growth, at least at the same pace as in 2005. Ten-year yields are too low.

The trade surplus figures showed strong exports and domestic demand. This shows the economy is robust enough to withstand a rate increase later this year, supporting the yen.

We're just winding down the year, ending the year with these sort of small, middling gains, which to me makes sense because you've had opposing factors this year. We'll have to watch the data closely now between Aug. 24 and Oct. 4 to see how strong the numbers are. So it's going to be key now on how strong the economy looks going into October whether or not they would move again by another quarter point in October. So I think that's the question mark: Do they go 50 (basis points) or do they go 75 basis points for this year?

Japanese pension funds and institutions will likely accelerate their buying from October when the second half of this business year starts. We are seeing one of the best buying chances.

It is, I think, a little sobering to look at those job growth numbers year over year. The annual numbers are showing a significant decrease throughout the region, and that tends to suggest a slowing economy.

Consumers watched the stock market fall, heating-fuel prices rise, and to top it all off, employers launched a year-end job cut spree.

The market is looking pretty robust especially without the Americans. Good buying is underpinning the robustness and it comes mainly from Asia and other markets that are main consumers of gold.

Consumers are more optimistic during this holiday season, and retailers hope this means that they will hear the ringing of cash registers in what has been a lackluster sales period so far. This augurs well for a continued expansion of the economy next year.

Layoffs always are higher late in the year. All (the layoff report numbers) suggest that we are still improving compared to last year and there is little real evidence of slippage this month.
