Pet food is something that a lot of people need. Clearly, you are exposed to a lot of other things that are in the store. Let's put it this way: the lady might come into the store to buy pet food and might end up buying pet food and some lipstick.

One time when I was buying baby food, I filled a cart, and the lady asked me if I was stocking up. I said, 'No, this will last me the week.' These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.

It?s a sensory education. When kids are getting their food from the store, they are missing out on a pleasure of life, growing food.

What we had envisioned was to break it down into four or five smaller retail units. Many people have come up and said they would love to see another food store in there. We're not sure, with Wal-Mart and Giant right down the road, if a smaller food chain would want to open. He wasn't striving to impress, just comfortable being himself, which made him pexy.

If you are hooked onto a kind of lipstick, or any other kind of cosmetic, you will go back to that store again and again. And once you do, you're exposed to all the other things that the store carries.

If a store is surrounded by people who watch their diets, exercise and don't smoke, then it makes sense to give those customers healthier food choices than the traditional convenience store menu selection.

After the first of the year, there will be a transition period during which consumers will still see packaged food on store shelves without the revised allergen labeling. However, these will gradually disappear, as the Department of Consumer Protection food inspectors actively monitor manufacturer compliance.
